KNOXVILLE (WATE) – A Johnson City man was arrested Wednesday for driving erratically through Knoxville’s World’s Fair Park, hitting a car, driving on stairs and assaulting a Public Building Authority officer.
Christopher English, 44, is charged with simple assault, DUI, leaving the scene of an accident and possession of an open container.
Knoxville police say they were called to the park around 6:45 p.m. to help a PBA officer who saw a 1994 Toyota driving erratically. The truck hit an unattended car in the L&N STEM Academy parking lot, before driving into the curbs and up the stairs in the park. The driver, later identified as English, kept driving erratically until eventually backing into the rear exit of Holiday Inn. He crashed through the metal railing and the concrete pillar, lifting the back of the truck off the ground.
The PBA officer then approached the truck and tried to check on English, who swung his arm and hit the PBA officer in the left arm. He then tried to drive off. The PBA officer then pepper sprayed English and when Knoxville police officers arrived, he was taken into custody.
Police say English continued to struggle with them and they were unable to do a field sobriety test. He was taken to a hospital for a blood draw. A 1/4 empty bottle of Smirnoff vodka was found in the car, which English admitted to buying and drinking.
