Kingsport, TN (WJHL) – The newest firefighters from around Northeast Tennessee honed their skills at the Kingsport Fire Department’s Training Ground Thursday.
17 newly hired firefighters from seven different departments got out of the classroom for some hands-on experience, mostly centered around search and rescue of fire victims.
“It could save lives, and you have to look at it like that,” says trainee Logan Carter, “and it’s a good feeling to know that you could save a life one day doing all this stuff that you’re learning right now.”
Trainers say the experience is invaluable to these new first responders.
“What we try to do is put them in positions that they have to think about it, not just do something,” says Kingsport FD Senior Captain Joel Jones, “we try to stress think about it no matter how easy it may appear.”
This is the 5th week of the Northeast Tennessee Regional Rookie School, a chance for the Kingsport Fire Department to put their new facility to good use.
“Most of us are type-A personalities and we like to learn with our hands,” says Carter, “and this is when we put the books to work and it works out well for us because we actually see what we’re doing and what we’re doing wrong.”
