Erwin, TN (WJHL) – The people of Unicoi County are calling one little boys actions brave Thursday night after he saved a little girl from a fire. The residents of an East Tennessee county are using the word hero to describe 10-year-old Jacob McKinney.
On February 7, Jacob was staying at his great grandmother Polly Leonard’s house.
“I was asleep and it was about one o’clock in the morning on a Sunday morning and my grandson come and grabbed me and said run run and I said what’s wrong”, Leonard.
All of the residents made it but Brianna ran back after a toy, a toy that was given to her when her father was deployed to Iraq.
Jacob said he knew he had to save her.
“I was just like oh gosh. I didn’t know if she was going to make it out. I guess it just could have been a whole lot worse”, said Jacob McKinney.
Jacob’s father Stefan says when he found out what his son had done he could not have been more scared or proud.
Stefan McKinney said, “I mean it will really make your heart sink when you think about them being in a situation like that. Like I said he just went above and beyond. He has just always been an amazing kid.”
Thursday he was honored at the Unicoi County Board of Education meeting with a proclamation sighted by Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey citing Jacob’s heroic actions that morning.
Brianna is recovering at Vanderbilt from severe burns and is expected to make a full recovery.
