KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) – A Knoxville man was convicted Wednesday of secretly recording a 12-year-old girl getting undressed in the bathroom.
Ruben Sanchez Montiel, 31, was convicted of especially aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor. His bond was revoked and sentencing is set for April 21.
During a three-day trial, assistant district attorneys told the jury that Montiel was living with is girlfriend and her 12-year-old daughter in August 2014.
When his girlfriend was at work, prosecutors said Montiel asked the girl if she was going to take a shower before bed. When she said she was, he hid his cell phone in the bathroom and turned on the video camera.
While she was getting ready for her shower, the girl noticed a light coming from the phone, saw it had recorded a video of her getting undressed and deleted it.
After interviewing the girl, the Knoxville Police Department contacted forensic investigators with the Internet Crimes Against Children task force who were able to recover the deleted video for evidence.
Montiel’s conviction carries a sentence of eight to 12 years in prison, 85 percent of which must be served before he is eligible for parole.
