TRI-CITIES, TN (WJHL) – Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Tri-Cities is launching a new campaign aimed at recruiting more mentors.
Monday the organization will begin it’s Man Up campaign, a campaign aimed at recruiting more male mentors.
Big Brothers Big Sisters leaders told News Channel 11, for every 10 mentors, 7 are women and just 3 are men.
Women can mentor boys under 10-years-old, but many parents with boys older than 10 specifically request a male “big”.
Right now, there is a 6 month to 1 year long waiting list for boys seeking male mentors, and boys make up 70 percent of that list.
“Sometimes we can match them sooner but we try not to really set their hopes too high so that’s definitely the most difficult part is just telling moms that call in, I’m sorry we don’t have any volunteers right now,” said Tri-Cities Enrollment and Match Specialist Melissa Dixon.
The Man Up Tennessee campaign starts Monday March 7th and will wrap up on April 29th.
