Avoca Volunteer FD plans benefit for firefighter battling cancer

SULLIVAN COUNTY, TN (WJHL)- Firefighters in Bluff City continue to rally around one of their own as a member of the department battles a form of brain cancer.

Mike Morrell, known to many in the Sullivan County community as “Mo” started falling ill shortly before Thanksgiving.

He has been the Assistant Fire Chief at the Avoca Volunteer Fire Department for almost 24 years.

Firefighters last updated the public on Morrell’s condition through their Facebook page March 4th.

The post said he was continuing radiation treatments and physical therapy.

They also asked for continued prayers.

On March 19th, the department will be hosting a benefit for Morrell that includes food, and events for all ages.

The event starts at 10am.

Firefighters say all proceeds will go toward Morrell, his family, and his medical expenses.
