KINGSPORT, TN (WJHL-TV) – There was a very special celebration this afternoon in Kingsport for someone who has spent decades volunteering for a local charity.
Mary Cunningham has volunteered with Meals on Wheels of Kingsport for nearly 40 years and the organization held a celebration to honor and thank Mary for her many contributions to the organization and the citizens of Kingsport. A proclamation was presented by Kingsport Mayor John Clark.
Mary has worked with the organization in nearly every capacity possible from helping to prepare meals, delivering meals to recipients, processing applications for recipients, home visits, recruiting and training of volunteers and much more. Due to her many years of tireless service to the organization, Meals On Wheels has been able to operate without hiring a director so more money can be spent to provide warm meals to those who need them in our community.
Liza Harmon from Meals On Wheels says that the organization couldn’t have survived without her, “She’s been the one driving force that has kept Meals on Wheels going for years and years and years and we want to celebrate her volunteer spirit. We’re an all volunteer organization so someone like Mary is just crucial and she has just done a fabulous job for us over the years.”
The United Way and Meals On Wheels estimate that Mary has had a hand in over 2 million meals in her near 40 years with the organization. Harmon says she has trained and helped so many with Meals On Wheels, “Mary has been a huge mentor to me, she first drafted me back in 1988 or so and asked me to get involved with trying to cover for her during the summer when she would take a little vacation and I was always so amazed at how organized she was and how she knew every single recipient and every single volunteer and had such a great rapport with everybody.”
