WASHINGTON COUNTY, VA (WJHL) – Washington County, Va. Sheriff’s Office deputies and Washington County Department of Social Services arrested two people on felony child abuse charges, after a 10-month-old child was found with three fractured ribs and a lacerated liver.
According to a WCVASO news release, between Feb. 15 and Feb. 18, the child received injuries, including but not limited to three fractured ribs and a lacerated liver.
The child has since been released from the hospital and is in the care of family.
Casey Eric Henderson, 26, of Glade Spring, Va.,and Mary Lizabeth Gawryla, 25, of Abingdon, Va., were arrested.
Henderson was charged with malicious wounding and abuse and neglect of children. He was taken to the Southwest Regional Jail in Abingdon, Va., where he was being held without bond.
Gawryla was charged with felonious child neglect. She was taken to the Southwest Regional Jail in Abingdon,Va., where she was released on $1,000 bond.
“Child abuse is one of the worst, if not the worst, crime our office is tasked with investigating,” Washington County Sheriff Fred Newman said. “We have a strong partnership with the Department of Social Services, the Commonwealth’s Attorney, the Children’s Advocacy Center and health care professionals that helps us discover and successfully prosecute incidents such as this. Children are precious and are our future. Child abuse, in any form, will not be tolerated.”
