SULLIVAN COUNTY, TN (WJHL) – Jury selection began Monday in the child abuse and neglect trial of an elementary school principal in Sullivan County.
Investigators charged former Holston View Elementary School Principal Jerry Poteat last year after surveillance video images showed Poteat standing inside the school using his cellphone, as a 5-year-old girl stood outside in the cold.
The documents revealed detectives caught several Holston View school employees lying and trying to cover up the reported allegation.
In May, Poteat pleaded not guilty to a charge of attempt to commit child abuse and attempt to commit child neglect.
The Bristol, Tenn. school system suspended Poteat without pay.
