State dismisses school board member’s domestic violence charge

David Hammond

WASHINGTON COUNTY, TN (WJHL)  – In recent weeks, prosecutors dismissed a charge of domestic violence against Washington County, TN School Board Member David Hammond.

Deputies previously charged Hammond with assaulting his wife. Hammond told us last summer he was confident the charge would be dismissed. His wife said she wanted the charge dismissed too. Both told us the original charge was the result of a misunderstanding.

“In my opinion, the evidence was there that I did not hit her,” Hammond said today of the dismissal. “My wife would not testify.”

Assistant District Attorney Erin McArdle told us today the state dismissed the charge, because the alleged victim did not want to prosecute.

“In my opinion, it doesn’t mean it didn’t happen,” she said. “It just means that the victim thought it was better to proceed in this manner.”
