UNICOI COUNTY, (WJHL)- The property assessor for Unicoi County passed away Tuesday evening, according to Unicoi County Mayor Greg Lynch.

Lynch said Wayne Peterson was in his sixties and died Tuesday after an extended illness. Peterson was appointed to the position about 10 months ago when former assessor, Patsy Bennett, resigned because of health issues.

Mayor Lynch said Peterson left his mark even though he was only in office for a brief time. “He’s just been real dedicated to his job over the period of that time and I’ve heard of people coming in there on Saturday and Sunday and he was in there working,” Lynch recalled. “He was just doing a real good job and it’s sad and our hearts go out to his family.”

The commission will have to fill Peterson’s position until a new property assessor is voted in later this year.
