MONTEVALLO, Ala. — The Tusculum College softball team dropped a pair of games Sunday afternoon at the University of Montevallo’s Falcon Frenzy, losing 4-3 to Simon Fraser University before falling 13-5 in six innings to the host Falcons at Orr Park.
The Pioneers (4-4) are scheduled to open their home schedule on Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. against North Greenville University at Red Edmonds Field.

The Pioneers saw a 3-0 lead slip away as the Clan (6-5) scored two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to rally for the win.
Miranda Beeler went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases and two runs scored for the Pioneers, while Jordan Keene was 2-for-4 with a double and a run batted in. However, the Pioneers were able to muster only five hits off Simon Fraser pitching in the game.
Tusculum started a rally in the top of the first inning against Simon Fraser starter Jessica Goulet as Taylor Battle led off with a walk and stole second. Robin Stoner walked with two outs and also stole second, but a strikeout ended the threat.
After being unable to take advantage of a one-out double by Morgan Mahaffey in the second, the Pioneers broke through with two runs in the top of the third. Battle and Beeler led off the inning with walks and moved up on a double steal, with Battle scoring on a throwing error for a 1-0 lead. Keene then followed with an RBI double to bring home Beeler and give the Pioneers a 2-0 advantage.
The Pioneers added a run in the fifth off Simon Fraser reliever Alia Stachoski as Beeler singled, stole second and third and scored on another throwing error for a 3-0 Tusculum lead. However, the Clan got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out, two-run home run by Taylor Lundrigan off Tusculum starter Taylor Plemons to pull within 3-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Clan loaded the bases on a single, walk and single before Victoria Saunders delivered a two-run single to give Simon Fraser its first lead of the game at 4-3. Tusculum put together a rally in the top of the seventh as Battle reached on an error with one out, and Beeler and Keene followed with singles to load the bases with one out. However, Stachoski retired the side on a popup and strikeout to preserve the one-run win for the Clan.
Stachoski worked five innings of relief for Simon Fraser to earn the win, allowing three hits and one unearned run while striking out nine. Plemons (1-2) allowed nine hits and four earned runs in 5 1/3 innings for the Pioneers, striking out two and walking a pair.
Lundrigan and Saunders each finished 2-for-3 with two runs batted in for the Clan, while Robyn Mogavero was 2-for-3 with a double as part of Simon Fraser’s nine-hit attack. Goulet allowed two runs (one earned) and walked four in two innings of work for Simon Fraser in a no-decision.
Montevallo 13, Tusculum 5 (6 innings) – box score
The Pioneers led 3-0 after a half-inning, then fought back from a 5-3 deficit to tie the score at 5-5 in the top of the fifth. However, the Falcons (5-7) scored three runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth to end the game by eight-run rule.
Celestia Davila was the hitting star for the Falcons, going 5-for-5 with two doubles, a home run and five runs batted in as part of a 13-hit attack by Montevallo. Lady Sarah Federico also drove in five runs with a double and a home run, while winning pitcher Jostlyn Higgerson had two hits and scored twice.
Tusculum had nine hits in the game, including a pair from Beeler who also stole a base and scored two runs. Stoner and Mahaffey each had two runs batted in for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers jumped on Falcon starter Abbey Pratt for three runs in the top of the first inning. Beeler reached on a bunt single with one out, went to second on a single by Keene and scored on a single by Stoner. After a fielder’s choice, Mahaffey delivered a double to left field to drive in Stoner and Emily Hester and give the Pioneers a 3-0 lead.
The Falcons came back with a run in the bottom of the first against Pioneer starter Eliza Davis on a leadoff home run by Davila, and added three runs in the second on a three-run home run from Federico. An RBI single from Kaytee Keefe extended the Montevallo lead to 5-3 after three full innings of play.
Tusculum came back with two runs in the fifth to tie the game at 5-5. Battle led off with a single and went to third on an error, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Keene. Stoner then delivered a squeeze bunt to drive home Beeler, who had singled and stolen a base, to knot the game at 5-5.
The Falcons went back on top 8-5 with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, including an RBI double by Federico and a two-run double by Davila. Montevallo finished off the win in the sixth with five runs, including an RBI single by Higgerson, a bases-loaded walk to Federico and a walk-off two-run single by Davila.
Davis (2-2) allowed nine hits and eight runs (seven earned) in 4 2/3 innings with two strikeouts and three walks for the Pioneers. Higgerson (3-3) tossed two innings of relief for the Falcons, allowing a run on three hits while striking out three.
