Schools in the Tri-Cities prepare for pencil and paper “TN Ready” tests after statewide system failure

JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL) – It is a race against the clock now for school administrators across the state of Tennessee as they rush to get pencil and paper standardize tests to schools after the new online tn ready test failed.

While “TN Ready” may not be ready, Debra Bentley with Johnson City schools says students and testing coordinators were ready.

“We are disappointed with the events surrounding TN Ready,” Debra Bentley with Johnson City Public schools said.

Bentley says seven schools in Johnson City got off to a pretty good start with testing on Monday. Students didn’t have any issues until about an hour into the online “TN Ready” testing.

“The majority of those did experience moderate to serious issues with the test being kick off, students were being kicked off the test,” Debra Bentley said.

Candice McQueen, the state’s education commissioner says the problem was centered on issues with a network that provides for Measurement INC.

“We’re still trying to identify exactly what happened and what were the moments that led up to the failure,” Commissioner Candice McQueen said.

Locally school system are standing in the ready. Waiting on the state to give them the go ahead for the next testing windows. Kingsport city schools were supposed to start testing on Tuesday, now they are getting students ready to make the switch back to paper test.

“Our staff and our technology staff, our testing coordinators at each school have been monitoring the situation and really just adjusting as we need to,” Andy True with Kingsport Schools said.

School officials said the paper test will be the same as the material created for online testing. Schools are expected to get NEW  testing window dates from the state on Thursday morning.
