One child remains hospitalized after weekend house fire in Unicoi County

UNICOI COUNTY, TN (WJHL)- Unicoi County Sheriff Mike Hensley said one child remains hospitalized at Vanderbilt after they were severely burned in a house fire Sunday morning.

An 8-year-old girl and 10-year-boy were flown to Vanderbilt after suffering second and third degree burns at a fire on Unicoi Drive early Sunday.

Sheriff Hensley said the 10-year-boy was either released Monday, or was expected to be released sometime Tuesday.

He also said the 8-year-old girl remained induced in a coma at Vanderbilt as of Tuesday afternoon.

There were 11 people inside the home when the fire broke out.

Sheriff Hensley said an elderly woman was taken to the Johnson City Medical Center to be treated for smoke inhalation but has since been released.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The Unicoi County Board of Education has set up a fund at the Bank of Tennessee called the Board of Education Butler Fund to help the family with medical bills and expenses.
