ROCKY TOP, Tenn. (AP) – The city of Rocky Top has settled a lawsuit with the copyright holders of the bluegrass song their town is named after.
House of Bryant Publications sued what was then the town of Lake City in 2013 in an effort to prevent the name change.
A federal court allowed the change but the case over potential trademark violations continued. Last month, the city and the copyright holders agreed to a settlement in which the city can use Rocky Top trademarks for noncommercial purposes only – such as in support of the fire department or library.
Developers promoting the name change had promised to build a multi-million dollar tourist complex in Rocky Top if it went through. A separate settlement with that group has not yet been finalized.
