ROGERSVILLE (WJHL) -Two Tri-Cities elementary schools won’t be closing after all.
Thursday night, the Hawkins County Board of Education voted not to close the McPheeters Bend and Keplar elementary schools.
It’s been a hot topic for months in Hawkins County.
In December, dozens of people packed a meeting with a committee of the Hawkins County Board of Education. Most openly opposed the school closure proposal.
Last month, the system said closing the rural and run-down schools would save the county $5 million dollars.
But that was not enough to convince board members who heard from many who felt the schools are critically needed.
Board Chairman Chris Christian said the vote was unanimous.
