Former Kingsport teacher pleads guilty to assaulting student

KINGSPORT, TN (WJHL) – A former teacher accused of assaulting a student at John Sevier Middle School has pleaded guilty to the charges against him.

Sullivan County District Attorney General Barry Staubus says Scott Davenport pleaded guilty in court Thursday.

Staubus adds that the judge granted probation for Davenport and will have his record cleared when he successfully completes his probation.

The probation will last for 11 months and 29 days.

Kingsport Police said an 11-year-old student at John Sevier Middle School was assaulted September 16, 2015, when Davenport was teaching his behavior modification class.

Police reviewed surveillance video they said showed Davenport pushing a student backwards several feet and falling to the floor.

Police said Davenport then went over to the student and forcefully pushed him down to the floor.

Investigators said the video showed the student did nothing to physically provoke Davenport.

Davenport resigned the next day.

Police say the student was not injured.
