NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – The iconic Barbie doll just got the makeover everyone’s been waiting for, introducing more realistic proportions and expanding the diversity of their skin tones.
The brand announced Thursday that along with Barbie’s original body shape, the dolls now come in tall, curvy, and petite.
It comes after years of criticism that the popular plastic doll created unrealistic expectations of women and misrepresented true body types.
Among the new changes are more seven more skin tones, as well as 22 eye colors, 24 hairstyles, and more “on-trend” fashions and accessories.
The more diverse additions come after last year’s changes when the brand added 23 new skin tones, hair colors, and the most notable of them all—a flat foot so Barbie can wear shoes other than heels.
“Barbie has always given girls choices – from her 180 careers, to inspirational roles, to her countless fashions and accessories,” said Evelyn Mazzocco, Senior Vice President and Global General Manager Barbie.
“We are excited to literally be changing the face of the brand – these new dolls represent a line that is more reflective of the world girls see around them – the variety in body type, skin tones and style allows girls to find a doll that speaks to them.”
“We believe we have a responsibility to girls and parents to reflect a broader view of beauty,” added Mazzocco.
Dolls with the new bodies are available for preorder at shop.mattel.com and will ship in February.
The collection will be available starting in spring 2016 at major toy retailers worldwide.
