WASHINGTON DC (WJHL) As expected, the Tri-Cities region’s two representatives in the U.S. House didn’t love President Obama’s State of the Union address, his last before leaving office.
Tennessee 1st District Congressman Phil Roe and Virginia 9th District Congressman Morgan Griffith – both Republicans – issued statements in response to the President’s speech.
“There weren’t many specifics in the speech,” said U.S. Rep. Phil Roe (R-Johnson City) who was interviewed live on News Channel 11 right after the speech. He also reacted to Donald Trumps’s huge lead in newly released national polls. Click on the video player to watch.
Roe’s fellow Republican Congressman Morgan Griffith focused his criticism on the President’s contention that the American economy is strong. “Tonight, the President spoke about the economy as if it were strong, but the fact of the matter is he has crippled our region’s economy in more than one way with his policies,” Griffith said. “Additionally, the President’s remarks on foreign policy were simply sad. President Obama talked about how powerful America is – and it is powerful – but I and many Americans believe that other nations don’t respect us as a result of his leadership. That is why Russian troops are in Ukraine, and why the Chinese are thumbing their noses at us by building islands in waters we believe are either international or Japanese.”
