Cavaliers women tripped up at Urbana

URBANA, Ohio – – Danie Shafer scored 31 points and handed out five assists as Urbana handed UVa-Wise its third consecutive loss, 84-78 at the Grimes Center Sunday. The victorious Blue Knights led by as many as 13 points in the contest and used eight made 3-pointers to overcome a 24-point performance from the Cavaliers’ Kayla Carey.

UVa-Wise (6-5, 2-4 MEC) found itself in a first quarter hole for the third consecutive contest. The Blue Knights used a 9-0 scoring spurt mid-way through the opening period to take a 19-10 lead with 4:33 showing in the quarter.

Urbana (5-6, 4-3 MEC) maintained its lead until halftime when a pair of Allison Ball free throws provided the final two points of the half, tying the game at 41. Ball’s charity shots capped a 7-2 run to close the second quarter.

Carey scored the opening points of the second half to give the Cavs their first lead of the day. The lead would be short lived as a 3-point bucket by Shafer tied the game at 47 with 7:52 to play in the third period. The long distance shot was part of a 15-0 scoring run that saw Urbana turn a three-point deficit into a 12-point advantage.

Coach Kristin Kunzman‘s team made a push at the start of the fourth quarter by attacking the basket. Following a 3-pointer by Ball, the team’s next 16 points came either in the paint or at the foul line. An inside bucket by Blair Harding cut the deficit to 80-76 with 2:23 remaining.

Four straight points by the Blue Knights pushed the lead back to three possessions, ending the Cavs hope for a comeback bid.

The win was the fourth in their last five Mountain East Conference games for Coach Haley Ducey’s squad.

Kennedy Boggs, 17 and Stefanie Davis, 11 also scored in double figures for the victors.

Ball scored a career-high 18 points while Taylor Sandidge tallied 16 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Nataila Saar corralled a season-best 11 rebounds in defeat as well.

UVa-Wise will conclude its four-game MEC road trip on Tuesday when team visits South Euclid, Ohio to tangle with Notre Dame College. Tip is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and the contest can be heard live on
