Johnson City leaders extend the deadline to save a downtown landmark

Some think it’s time the old U-Haul sign be torn down. The last owner left if it and it’s in an area being redeveloped by the city.

Others think its history worth preserving. The problem is they haven’t yet raised the necessary funds to restore the sign.

Johnson City commissioners took up the topic at Thursday night’s meeting and could have ordered the sign’s demolition.

Instead, they agreed to extend the fundraising deadline until the next commission meeting February 4th.

The Johnson City development authority wants to raise $25-thousand dollars. The sign’s future is still uncertain with some on the board indicating demolition may still be needed if the funds to restore it aren’t raised.
