Name released of Knoxville shoplifter killed in an officer-involved shooting

KNOXVILLE (WATE) – The name of the deceased shoplifting suspect shot by a Knox County deputy at a West Knoxville sporting goods store has been released.

Amos Frerichs, 32, was shopping inside the business when was approached by investigators with KCSO’s Shoplifting Task Force. The suspect fled the store and into the parking lot where he aggressively resisted arrest by the deputies. Deputies deployed their tasers, however, Frerichs continued to fight and resist arrest.

He was able to get into his vehicle, at which time, he ran over both deputies knocking them to the ground. One of the deputies was able to get to his feet and fired his service weapon as the suspect was attempting to hit the deputy again with his vehicle. After being struck the suspect crashed his into more than one parked car. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene. Both deputies were treated for numerous non-life threatening injuries.

Frerichs has a long criminal history which includes multiple charges and arrests in Knox, Blount and Loudon counties. His previous charges include multiple assaults and thefts.

KPD tell WATE 6 On Your SIde that it is believed Frerichs fought with the deputies due to multiple outstanding warrants on file for his arrest in Knox county.
