JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL)- Hundreds of little girls, along with their running buddies, flocked to East Tennessee State University’s Thomas Stadium for the 9th annual Girls on the Run fall 5K.
The event is all part of the Girls on the Run program. Girls on the Run seeks to emphasize character building to 3rd and 4th grade girls in the community by participating in a twelve-week session.
While the girls do train in the program, organizers say that the most important aspect of the session is not the physical but rather the mental impact.
Co-Council Director for Girls on the Run, Jessica Thomas said they are, “Teaching young girls self-confidence and to feel good about themselves and that they can be leaders in the world. This program has had a huge effect on so many young girls.”
Thomas also said that participating in an event like this 5K gives girls an opportunity to set a goal and work diligently towards achieving it.
