MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Dec. 5, 2015) – Kurt Brooks helped the Milligan College men’s basketball team withstand Montreat College’s furious run over the last two minutes, scoring a basket with 4.2 seconds left to send the Buffs to a 68-66 win in Appalachian Athletic Conference action on Saturday.
The basket gave Brooks the second double-double of his career and improved Milligan to 8-3 (4-1 AAC). It marked the third time this season the senior scored the winning points in the closing seconds.
Brooks had 11 points and 10 rebounds while Julian Bailey led all scorers with 17 points and 11 rebounds, his sixth double-double of the season. Gabriel Logan added 11 points, two assists and three steals, and Milos Petrovic had six points and four blocks.
Milligan trailed for much of the first half before using a 13-5 run to eliminate Montreat’s largest lead. Alex Biggerstaff capped the run with a couple of made free throws to tie it, and Bailey and Tyler Nichols saw that the Buffs finished the first half with the last four points.
The Buffs then opened the second half on a 9-2 run which looked to put the game away until Montreat rallied late. With under eight minutes left and Milligan leading by 10, the Cavaliers scored eight straight points, six coming by way of the three-ball as Amir Davis and Alonzo Mobley knocked down a pair during the stretch.
From there, the Buffs held the lead and went ahead by as many as six with under two minutes left, but Montreat responded right back once again. The Cavaliers scored six straight with a basket by Mobley at the 29-second mark tying the game at 66 and setting up Brooks’ game winner.
Mobley was Montreat’s leading scorer, finishing with 14 points and five rebounds. Only two other Cavaliers made it to double figures as Davis and Deonta Patterson had 11 and 10.
Milligan will be on the road until the new year but has one more game in town before heading into Christmas break. The Buffs will be at ETSU on Thursday, Dec. 10, for a 7 p.m. tip in an exhibition game. The next home game for Milligan will be Saturday, Jan. 2, when the Buffs host No. 6 Union College.
