Convicted sex offender who prompted Amber Alert wants trial pushed back

HAWKINS COUNTY, TN (WJHL) – In a motion filed today in federal court, a convicted sex offender asked a judge to push back his trial, but his attorney said the motivation for that motion was not to delay the case.

A federal judge previously declared Benjamin Shook competent to stand trial. Shook, who is currently housed at the Claiborne County Detention Center, sparked a nationwide Amber Alert after investigators said he lured a 14-year-old Hawkins County girl away from her home.

He is supposed to stand trial on January 5th, but according to court documents, his attorney says he needs more time to meet with the defendant and to complete an investigation.
