VSP: Three killed in Buchanan Co. crash, driver flown to hospital with serious injuries

BUCHANAN COUNTY, VA (WJHL) – Virginia State Police troopers are investigating a fatal crash in Buchanan County.

According to a VSP news release, the single-vehicle crash happened in the Council community of the county around 4:20 p.m. Wednesday on Route 600, less than a mile west of Route 681.

VSP said a 2000 Volkswagen Passat was traveling west on Route 600 when it ran off the right side of the road. The driver, Justin L. Blevins, 25, of Elizabethton, reportedly lost control of the vehicle, crossed back into the travel lanes, ran off the left side of Route 600 and hit a tree.

Blevins was flown to Bristol Regional Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries.

According to the release, three passengers in the vehicle died at the scene.

VSP said the deceased include Carmela M. Johnson, 18, of Honaker, Va., and Blevins’ two sons, Justin L. Blevins, Jr., 5, and Jonah I. Blevins, 3.

The children and Johnson were all properly restrained.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
