AUSTIN (KXAN) — The nation’s oldest living veteran, Richard Overton, has been hospitalized at St. David’s for pneumonia.

Overton was expected to be a special guest at Austin Community College’s annual Veterans Day commemoration at the ACC Veterans Resource Center. Due to his illness Overton was unable to attend; Martin Wilfred spoke on his behalf.

Overton celebrated his 109th birthday in May with “Might Fine at 109.” Might Fine Burgers sponsored Overton’s birthday party; Austin’s finest were in attendance.

Overton has received numerous honors for his service from the mayor of Austin to the President of the United States.

“From everybody that lives in this city, we do really consider you a treasure and everybody wishes you a happy birthday as well,” Mayor Adler told Overton at his birthday celebration.

Overton has seen 11 presidents, two World Wars, the 19th amendment that gave women the vote and Austin has doubled in size five times during his lifetime.
