GREENEVILLE, TN (WJHL)- More than 6,000 veterans live in Greene County, 250 veterans from the county were killed in action, and until Wednesday it was one of the only places in our area without a place to honor them.
Last year we told you about a veteran raising money to build a veterans memorial in Greene County, and Wednesday his dream became a reality.
After a year of fundraising in the community, veteran Grady Barefield and a team of volunteers unveiled the first Greene County veteran’s memorial.
“This was an extremely awesome, overwhelming, dream that’s come true,” Barefield said.
He and his committee of volunteers have raised about 50,000 dollars, completing the first phase of the monument. He hopes to raise 80,000 dollars to finish the last phase.
“For me as well as the other veterans now we now have a permanent place where we can come and reflect on the past as well as the future and it’s something that we can be very proud of,” Barefield said.
The new Veteran’s Memorial Park is located near Andrew Johnson National Cemetery in Greeneville.
