BRISTOL, TN/VA (WJHL)–Bristol motor speedway announced last month that it would be making a colossal addition– and soon.
“It’s not your normal construction methods. What we’re doing has never been done before, so it is very challenging in the different parts of what’s got to be done to make this work,” said Scott Hatcher, Vice President of Operations for BMS.
The 700 ton TV display will span nearly thirty feet wide and 63 feet tall. Today’s groundbreaking featured a drilling demonstration that tested the strength of the ground where the display’s structure towers will be built.
Because of the size of colossus, the display will be in partial pieces then be transported inside the arena, to be pieced together in its final resting place.
Drilling began today at the site of where towers will be constructed to anchor Colossus.
Jerry Caldwell, Bristol Motor Speedway’s general manager, said “this is a game changer for us. This really is an enhancement that is for the fans that attend Bristol motor speedway already but it also opens us up to many, many different options”.
Colossus is on track to be unveiled in the spring of 2016. Just in time for Bristol’s race weekend in April.
