BRISTOL (WJHL) – Some retirees of Alpha Natural Resources and their families could soon find themselves without medical coverage.
Bristol-based Alpha Natural Resources continues reorganization efforts after it filed for bankruptcy back in August.
Earlier this week, attorney for the company filed a motion with bankruptcy court to authorize Alpha Natural Resources to stop paying what it called “non-pension welfare benefits” to non-union retirees and qualified spouses.
Those benefits include medical insurance and life insurance.
If approved by the court, the move would impact more than 4,500 people and coverage would end Dec. 31.
A hearing on the request will take place Nov. 17.
