JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL) – Johnia Berry was wrapping toys for children in the hours before someone entered her Knoxville apartment and murdered her.
Eleven years later, her family continues their efforts to keep Johnia’s legacy alive and help needy kids in the process.
They kicked off the 10th annual Johnia Berry Memorial Toy Drive this morning at area Food City stores.
“I want to keep her memory alive and let everyone know that Johnia was a happy person,” Joan Berry, Johnia’s mother, said. “She loved life and she had a great love for children.”
People donated roughly 3,000 gifts last year and the Berry’s said the most rewarding part is getting letters from grateful children who received the gifts.
