Greene Co. Sheriff’s Dept. K-9 unit receives surprise donation from local resident

GREENE COUNTY, TN (WJHL) – Over the weekend, the Greene County Sheriff’s Department got a surprise donation from a local resident.

Sheriff Pat Hankins says some of his deputies were training with the K-9 unit on Sunday when he got the call.

Sheriff Hankins says a man named David Snapp walked up to deputies at Legion field while they were training and handed them a check for $1,000.

Snapp told deputies he was interested in the program and wanted to take part in it.

Right now Sheriff Hankins says they are in the process of getting their K-9 unit back up and running after a K-9 passed away last year.

So far they have one K-9 in the jail, and will have two more dogs certified this month.

The money Snapp donated will go toward hot boxes.

Sheriff Hankins says they are devices used to alert deputies with an alarm when it gets too hot in the car for a K-9 to be in.

He says this will be a big contribution to the department as one hot box costs approximately $769.
