ABINGDON, VA (WJHL) – Abingdon leaders voted Monday night to postpone a vote on the rezoning of a property for a proposed retail development near the Virginia Creeper Trail.
Despite loud objections from audience members inside Barter Theater, the Abingdon Town Council voted to postpone the reading on the rezoning of the land at The Old Meadow’s Farm. Abingdon’s town manager said the applicant, Cerma Corp, asked council members to postpone the second reading of the resolution until the council’s December 7 meeting.
The Old Meadow’s Farm, located at 440 Green Springs Road, borders the Virginia Creeper Trail and must be rezoned from farm to business in order for the development — to include a Food City as the anchor store — to build in that location..
After voting to reschedule the vote, council members moved the public hearing to the end of the meeting.
“You can’t just change an agenda to suit one persons interest,” yelled a member of the audience.
“People were upset and I don’t know if there’s a legitimate reason to delay talking about the issue,” said Patricia Hylton who attended the meeting.
The reason for the postponement request was not announced at the meeting.
