SMYTH COUNTY, VA (WJHL) – Southwest Virginia law enforcement officers arrested two people in a drug sting operation at a Kangaroo truck stop in the Atkins area of Smyth County, Va. Oct. 22.
According to a news release, Smyth County, Va. Sheriff’s Office, the Virginia State Police, the Wythe County, Va. Sheriff’s Office and members of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) conducted the operation at the truck stop after officers saw a drug deal take place.
A traffic stop revealed approximately nine ounces of methamphetamine, $2,380 in cash and a handgun.
The driver of the vehicle, Charles William Sturgill, 39, of Saltville, Va., was charged with possession of a schedule II controlled substance, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm while in possession of a schedule II controlled substance.
Sturgill was taken to the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail, where he was being held without bond pending an arraignment in Smyth County General District Court.
Leah McGuire, 29, of Marion, Va., was charged with possession of a schedule II controlled substance and she was taken to the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail, where she was being held on a $5,000 bond pending her arraignment in Smyth County General District Court.
According to the release, Sturgill’s residence was also searched and two additional firearms, an additional six ounces of methamphetamine and $3,480 in cash was also seized.
Two vehicles, a recreational vehicle were also seized in the investigation and a search of an RV revealed five additional firearms.
Additional charges are pending.
