Applebee’s to pay employee with autism who worked hundreds of hours – for free

PORTHMOUTH, Rhode Island — Applebee’s has agreed to pay an employee with autism after his parents said their son worked hundreds of hours for free. Caleb Dyl, 21, was placed at the Rhode Island restaurant as a prep cook by the state’s Resources for Human Development, WPRI reported.

While the restaurant paid Dyl for 166 hours of work, Dyl’s parents said their son worked 480 hours since August 2014. The Rhode Island Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals has launched an investigation into the payday delay.

Dyl’s father said restaurant managers told him his son’s paperwork had been misplaced.

“It wasn’t about money for him, though,” Dyl told WPRI. “He liked working there. So we went to RHD a number of times and expected the problem to be taken care of.”
