Saltville police officer fired, accused of “improper data request”

Thursday night, Saltville, Virginia town leaders met behind closed doors and then announced that a police officer had been terminated.

SALTVILLE, VA (WJHL)  A Southwest Virginia police officer is off the force after being accused of trying to get information about members of the fire department.

Thursday night, Saltville, Virginia town leaders met behind closed doors and then announced that a police officer had been terminated.

That officer’s name wasn’t released.

But in a brief statement issued by the Mayor, the town revealed the police officer allegedly made an “improper data request” in an attempt to access the driver’s licence status for fire department members.

“The Officer we believe acted improperly and illegally by having criminal justice data improperly run and disseminated,” said Mayor Todd Young in a brief prepared statement read at a called meeting of Saltville Town Council Thursday night. “After an official inquiry and consultation by the Virginia State Police, we have reached the decision to release the Officer of his official duties.”

Mayor Young said no other information could be released because of “the potential of further investigations of all persons involved.”
