Tips for finding Halloween costumes on a budget

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO (FOX21) – Halloween is days away, and many people are still trying to decide what they’re going to be–but finding that perfect costume can take a toll on your pocketbook. According to Forbes, Americans are expected to spend $2.6 billion on Halloween costumes. Children’s costumes alone are predicted to bring in over $1 billion while adult costumes are predicted to bring in another $1.22 billion.

Whether your trick-or-treaters plan on dressing up as ghouls, goblins, or princesses, there are plenty of ways to have a haunting Halloween without leaving town or breaking the bank.

There’s a research group that says the average consumer will spend about $75 per person on Halloween accessories and items this Halloween season. That to me is the scariest part of Halloween,” Bradd Hafer, Director of Marketing and Communications at Discover Goodwill, said.

But the price tags don’t have to be frightening. Goodwill has both new and used costumes.

“It doesn’t matter which route you go. You can frequently find ready-made costumes or do-it-yourself costumes in the neighborhood of $10,” said Hafer.

Some stores even have the option to borrow a costume if you know it won’t get recycled.

“A lot of the kids costumes are going to sit rental-wise anywhere between $10 to $25 and then they will sell anywhere from $25 to $45,” Sammy Gleason, shift leader at Zeezo’s, said.

But if you’re looking for something you can hang onto, sometimes piecing an outfit together will save you a fortune.

“The ability to come in and just find bits to fit together, like if you were going to do a poison ivy costume and you didn’t necessarily want to buy one, we have a whole rack of just green corsets, green gloves, red hair. It’s great,” said Gleason.

New this year at Goodwill they have Master Costume Helpers who will make sure your little monsters leave with a costume they love.
