CORBIN, KY (WJHL) – CSX Transportation, Inc. announced significant job cuts Tuesday morning at its Corbin, KY facility, only days after laying off most workers at the Erwin train yard in Unicoi County.

Both moves were attributed to a reduction in coal transportation in Appalachia.

CSX furloughed 277 workers at Erwin last week. Those layoffs were expected to be permanent.

Corbin will lose 180 workers, according to the company.

“The shops at Corbin were primarily used to maintain, inspect and service locomotives and rail cars for coal trains moving from Central Appalachia to the Eastern consumption regions,” according to a company news release. “The decision to close the locomotive and car shops and a locomotive service center is the result of reduced need for locomotive and car maintenance there because of the significant decline of the region’s coal traffic.”

CSX said about 100 employees will remain at the Corbin facility to help manage train traffic.
