Blountville man sentenced to 18 years after pleading guilty to child sex crimes

(WJHL) – A Blountville man will spend the next 18 years in prison for using the internet to entice children for sexual purposes.

A judge sentenced Joel Cormier, 27, to 18 years in federal prison and a life term of supervised release on Monday.

Cormier pleaded guilty to trying to entice a child for illegal sexual activity.

The investigation began when the family of a 15-year-old reported Cormier tried to meet their child using the internet and said he had traveled to meet for sexual purposes and on several occasions.

A total of six children were solicited by Cormier and investigators said he had sexual activity with five of them.

In his plea agreement, he admitted he knew the victims were minors and that he portrayed himself as a 15-year-old child with terminal brain cancer in order to talk with some of them.
