BRISTOL, TN (WJHL)– A local hero was honored in Bristol, today– for his efforts to end domestic violence.
Every year a Bristol officer is recognized as the recipient of the mark Vance award. The award is named in honor of the late mark Vance. Officer Vance was responding to a domestic violence call in 2004 when he was ambushed and killed.
Now every year, an award is presented to an officer who has gone above and beyond the call of duty– to assist in the prosecution of domestic abusers. This years’ recipient is office Joe Newman.
Newman has been on the force since 2011 and in that time he has shown outstanding performance in combating domestic violence. Newman tells us how it feels to have been presented with the mark Vance memorial award.
Newman stated, “Unfortunately, I never got the chance to meet him. But from what I’ve heard from everybody else– he was a great officer. And it’s definitely an honor to be remembered in his name.”
And it’s appropriate to present the award this month… As October is domestic violence awareness month.
