Convicted sex offender who disappeared with a 14-year-old to stand trial

GREENEVILLE, TN (WJHL) – A convicted sex offender, who disappeared with a 14 year old Hawkins County girl will stand trial.

Friday morning, a federal court judge in Greeneville ruled Benjamin Shook mentally competent to stand trial.

Friday, the 41 year old appeared in court to hear the findings of his mental evaluation.

Shook is charged with failure to register as a sex offender, he pleaded not guilty.

After a more than two week search, investigators found Shook with the teenage girl in Adkins, Virginia.

After ruling Shook competent to stand trial, the judge set a trial date for January 5th.
