Johnson city commissioners approved an expansion for the Tweetsie Trail Thursday night.
Director of Public Works, Phil Pindzola proposed expanding the trail along Legion Street and into the downtown area of Johnson City.
Commissioners approved $100,000 for that portion of the project.
Mayor Ralph Van Brocklin says this is just part of a bigger vision for the trail.
“We hope that we are going to at least get down into Jonesborough. It would be great if we could find a way with the state to extend the trail along 11E down into Greene County. When you start doing that the utility of the trail system to bicyclists goes up immensely,” said Van Brocklin.
If everything goes according to plan that expansion could be ready to use by summer 2016.
