Former Abingdon assistant manager sentenced to 2 years in prison on fraud charges

ABINGDON, VA (WJHL) – The former assistant manager for Abingdon, Va., was sentenced to two years in prison Friday on fraud charges.

According to court documents, William Garrett Jackson, pleaded guilty in June to one count of theft from a program receiving federal funds. He faced 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine in the case, but a federal judge in Abingdon sentenced him to two years in prison and two years probation after that. A potential fine was not imposed but Jackson was ordered to make $76,404.59 restitution to the town of Abingdon.

He was remanded to custody at Friday’s hearing.

According to the town of Abingdon, Jackson admitted to using a town-issued credit card for personal expenses from 2007-2014. He admitted to using the card for personal expenses, including a Netflix subscription, groceries and cell phone bills.

The town of Abingdon has since implemented strict internal purchasing controls.

Jackson began working for Abingdon in August 2003 and resigned in July 2014. He took a job in February as a public affairs officer for the National Park service but resigned from that job June 11.

Jackson’s conditions after release include his not opening lines of credit without approval.
