BIG STONE GAP, VA (WJHL) – The moment is finally here. The movie bearing the name of a Southwest Virginia town is now in theaters.
It was two years ago, that New York Times bestselling author (turned director), Adriana Trigiani, announced the movie “Big Stone Gap” would be filmed in her hometown.

The movie brings to life a story of a woman named Ave Maria Mulligan (Ashley Judd) , now “an old-maid” turning 40, living in a coal mining town in Appalachian Mountains in 1978. Ave Maria ,“decides that happiness is for other people – that is, until a long-buried family secret throws her quite life off-course,” according to the movie’s official website.
The movie’s cast and production company will celebrate the movie’s opening with a weekend celebration, a community pancake breakfast, a 5K run on a route of the actual filming locations, a parade through the middle of town with several area bands, floats honoring the movie’s extras and many other themed floats from school, civic and other organizations, all based on people and places depicted in the book and movie.
Among the cast members expected to attend the weekend celebration are: Ashley Judd, Patrick Wilson, John Benjamin Hickey, Jenna Elfman, Adriana Trigiani, and many of the local actors that lent their talent to the film.
Also, scheduled is a ticketed reception at the John Fox, Jr. House to meet some of the stars in the movie, a reunion for the many extras to be held at the June Tolliver House and Trail of the Lonesome Pine theater, and finally a community block party, featuring an actual red carpet walk down the town’s main drag—Wood Avenue—for many of the local actors and main characters.

1:00 pm – 5:00 pm: Meet the Extras at the Trail of Lonesome Pine Drama
1:30 pm – 2:30 pm: News conference at Heritage Church of God located at 775 Wood Avenue
5:00 pm – 7:00 pm: Red Carpet Walk on Wood Avenue
7:00 pm – 9:00 pm: Downtown Block Party 1970’s music street dance fireworks
