BUFFALO, NY (WIVB) — A woman accused of killing her 8-year-old son to save him from going to hell will not stand trial after three evaluations by prosecution and the defense confirmed she is mentally ill.
A judge found Jessica L. Murphy mentally ill after learning about three separate evaluations, according to prosecutors in the case. The evaluations pointedly described Murphy as being dangerously mentally ill.
Murphy has been embroiled in the murder case since May of 2014 when she stabbed her child overnight. Police interviews revealed Murphy stabbed Jacob Noe to save him.
“Everyone has to die. He had to die. I am saving him from going to hell,” Murphy said in May.
From the start of the case, Murphy, her defense and her family acknowledged she has grappled with mental illness, describing her diagnosis as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
The findings by a New York Supreme Court Judge mean Murphy, 29, will not stand trial for second degree murder. She has been indefinitely committed to a mental health facility until doctors are confident she can reenter society.
If she had been found capable of standing trial, Murphy would have faced up to life behind bars.
