SULLIVAN COUNTY, TN (WJHL) Construction crews are getting ready to start a repair effort aimed at saving Boone Dam.

Last year, TVA said it found a sinkhole at the base of the dam.

This past summer, TVA announced water is seeping under and through the earth-filled part of Boone Dam, and the repairs would take at least five years.

Engineers ordered the lowering of Boone Lake to protect people downstream.

On Tuesday, TVA said construction crews removed light poles to make way for a work platform that will be needed for future construction.

TVA said grouting work is being done around the original sinkhole found one year ago.

TVA plans to drill holes in the dam, fill the holes with grout and then construct a massive concrete wall against the earthen portion of the dam to stop the flow of water.

Until the dam is fixed, Boone Lake will stay at record low levels.
