SMYTH COUNTY, VA (WJHL) – A Southwest Virginia library once in danger of closing will remain open.
Representatives of the Saltville Public Library, part of the Smyth –Bland Regional Library System in Smyth and Bland counties, signed a new memorandum of understanding with town leaders in Saltville on Monday morning.
The agreement calls for Saltville’s 2016-17 budget to include $20,150 for operation of the library in addition to the $1,900 the town already provides annually.
WJHL reported in April that the library system could face a budget cut from Smyth County.
Saltville Town Manager Mike Talyor said there was a real danger that the Saltville library could close by December had an agreement not been reached.
Library system director Pat Hatfield said the expected increase in funding from Saltville puts it at roughly what the town of Chilhowie, also in Smyth Couny, contributes to its library. Hatfield said the Saltville library was the only library in the system facing a funding challenge.
