Hawkins County student-athlete up for SI Kids “Sportskid of the Year” award

ROGERSVILLE, TN (WJHL) – A local student-athlete has garnered national attention, and is now up for an honor from the country’s top sports magazine.

Cherokee High School freshman Harper Russell is one of five finalist for Sports Illustrated for Kids’ Sportskid of the Year 2015, and you can help her win the honor by voting for her.

Little League Baseball sensation Mo’ne Davis won the award in 2014.

Russell runs track and cross country, along with playing basketball.

Here’s what her bio on the SI Kids website says about her accomplishments:

“Harper’s middle school in Tennessee didn’t have a cross-country team. So what did she do? She wrote a paper about why the school should have one, submitted it to the athletic director, and convinced him to start one. She led the inaugural team to a second-place finish in the conference last year as an eighth-grader and finished third individually at the state middle school championship meet. Over the last nine years she has set 28 Tennessee course-certified age-group records in distances ranging from one to 6.2 miles. An AAU Junior Olympic champion in the 1,500 meters in 2013 and ’14, last spring Harper won her school’s award for the highest GPA and most community service hours. And as a point guard on the basketball team, she scored more than 20 points in 10 games and became the school’s all-time leader in three-pointers. Now a freshman, Harper is in the process of recruiting enough runners to start a cross-country team at her high school.”
