BRISTOL, VA — The golf clubs were swinging at the Virginian Monday, but it had a strong football flair to it with two Green Bay greats helping raise money for UVa-Wise athletics.
For more than 20 years, Wise athletics staffer Carroll Dale has been bringing old Packers teammates to the tournament, helping bring golfers to the event.
This year it was his old battery mate, Boyd Dowler. The pair were wide receiver bookends for the Packers under Vince Lombardi, winning the first two Super Bowls together.
Monday, they were rejoined for the cause.
“We have been friends and teammates at a special time for us in Green Bay with Coach Lombardi, and we won a lot of world titles together,” Dowler said. “Winning helps friendships, and friendships help winning, and we did both.”
“We have kept in touch quite a bit, so it’s just great to see each other,” Dale said. “Boyd and I probably do call each other moreso than the other guys.”
The golf event raises about $15,000-$20,000 to pay operating expenses for Cavaliers athletics.
