JOHNSON CITY, TN. WJHL– A world renowned kayaker made an appearance in Johnson City today.

Michal Smolen took home the bronze medal for kayaking in the 2015 world championships and today he stopped by East Tennessee State University to talk about his chances of going to Rio as a member of the Olympic team next summer.

Smolen just barely missed joining team USA at the 2012 Olympics because of citizenship, but he officially became a u-s citizen in 2013 and now he’s putting a lot of hard work and dedication into making his country proud.

Smolen said, “It’s really special for me to be able to represent the United States and all the people who have actually helped me to get to the point where I am and to be out there in competitions like the world championships… It’s just amazing.”

Qualifying for team USA won’t officially take place until next spring…but after placing 3rd in the world championships- Smolen has a great shot at making the cut.
